He was man who believed in Hindu-Muslim Unity and tried to get freedom for India from British people. Azimulloah tried his best to get foreign help against the British people. He wrote many letters to the sultan of Turkey for getting help from them. He also made some overtures to the Egypt.
Azimullah was a handsome slim young man of dark olive complexion. He was more passionate with dressing sense. He love wear oriental costumes which were covered with rings. He was well known as Dewan Azimullah khan who was initially appointed as secretary and later he became the prime Minister to Nana Sahib.
Personal life of Azimullah khan
He was one the leading figures in the 1857 Revolt. His exact date of birth was unknown to everyone. He was rescued as a Muslim boy from the famine of 1837-38 along with his mother. Azimullah Khan stayed in a Muslim orphanage where his mother worked as “Ayah”. He learnt English and French in a government school at Kanpur.
He worked as a secretary for many British officers. From there he was taken to do service for Nana sahib, adopted son of late peshwa Baji Rao. He played a prominent role in the revolute 1857. He was a confidential advisory of Nana Sahib peshwa. He was famous for his loyalty towards master Nana sahib and for his love for the country.
Political works of azimullah
The main motive of Nana sahib and Azimullah was that the Hindus and Muslims should unite and fight together for India’s freedom. Azimullah khan travelled to many important stations in northern India and prepared the ground for the revolt. The preparation which is made by azimullah was kept confidential.
The letter was written in code, secret symbols of the coming bloodshed, the red lotus and the chapattis were passed from village to village and from regiment to regiment. He worked as an active organizer for the revolt. Azmiullah was believed by many people to have been the real leader of the rebellion.
He visited London in order to get a pension for Nana sahib before the rebellion broke out. In England, he was taken under the lady Lucie Duff Gordon. She was an intellectual and translator. Her husband was a civil servant and cousin of prime minister.
Azimullah’s role in Rebellion and Revolt
Although his mission in London was not successful, Azimullah came back with more dangerous idea. The dangerous idea of azimullah was cultivated as a seed of Indian rebellion of 1857 by Nana sahib. Azimullah khan played a prominent role in Indian mutiny. Although he was a chief advisory of Nana sahib, one of the famous leaders of rebellion was Muslim who made Azimullah as a marginal figure or rebellion.
Death of Azimullah
He sacrificed his entire life in the Indian independence movement. He fought more for the Hindu-Muslim unity and their freedom in India. Unfortunately the revolt was not achieved by him. Azimullah khan died of fever in late 1859. The exact date of his death is unknown to everyone.
