Sidhu Murmu was a very well known name of the Santhal rebellion who fought against the British rule and the corruption which was been done by the upper caste people and zamindars in the part which is known as Jharkhand today.
He is the person who is a great importance of history and is been known for the rebel he gave against British rule that time. Sidhu Murmu was known as a Santhal leader who fought for the freedom. In his honour there is a university which is named after him Sidhu Kanhu Murmu University and there is also a stamp made to honour him.
Sidhu Murmu was not alone he has a companion who was with him throughout the struggle and the rebel. His name was Kanhu Murmu. They both were born in the village of Bhognadih which is in the district of Sahibganj. They made a group of 10,000 Santhals to fight against the British force.
In July 1855 Sidhu Murmu with the help of Kanhu Murmu brought a fight which was something the British would have never experienced before. On 30th June, 1855 the Santhals who were ready to rebel against the British rule assembled in a very large number and when the police tried arresting Sidhu Murmu the crowd killed the police officer.
When the Santhals were fighting against the military it is said that they took shelter to protect themselves in a mud house. Rather than coming out they showered the officers with arrows. The military tried to make a hole in the mud house so that they can bring out the people hiding inside it but they still did not surrender and they answer the military back with the arrows.
After lot of struggle when the arrows stopped the military officers opened it and when inside just to find out only one man with the bodies and when they ask him to surrender he killed himself with an battle axe.
The end of the Santhals
When they started the fight against the British rule the britishers also came out with their force and planned a strategy against them. The Santhals were not aware of the strategy made against them and in the strategy the Santhals were been defeated and the British officers made sure that even the last drop of the rebel should be finished off and completely disappear.
Today also the day is been celebrated in Santhals as the day of the martyrs who sacrified their lives just to bring freedom and makes the Santhals independent against the landlords and the British rule.
Death of Sidhu Murmu
According to the belief it is said that Sidhu Murmu with Kanhu Murmu was captured by the British forces and it is said that they were been killed in the captivity. The struggle and the death of both the heros was not in vain and it brought out the Santal Parganas Tenancy Act which removed some kinds of exploitation done on the people.
