He was commonly known as JP and Loknayak which means leader of Masses. Jayaprakash Narayan was a famous communist and social reformer. He was a great personality who vigorously participated in the freedom struggle against the British.
He was imprisoned for several times during the Indian freedom movement. Narayan was well known as a person who was leading the opposition to Indira Gandhi for giving a call for peaceful revolution. JP Narayan played a significant role in the Quit India Movement. He earned lots of respect and fame with an active participation in Quit India Movement. Narayan was a person of victory to the light.
Early life of Jayaprakash Narayan
Narayan was born in the remote village of Sitabdiara which is located in between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. His father’s name was Harsudayal who worked as a junior official in the canal department of the State Government. Jayaprakash Narayan was called as Baul by others affectionately. He stayed with his grandmother to do his studies in sitabdiara.
There was no high school in the village of sitabdiara, so Jayaprakash travelled to Patna to do his studies in collegiate school. He was an intelligent student in his school. His was very talented in essay writing. He wrote an essay with the title “The present state of Hindi in Bihar”. He won the best essay award for that essay in the school.
Career of Jayaprakash
Narayan joined the Bihar vidyapeeth which was founded by Dr. rajendra Prasad. Bihar vidyapeeth is specially meant for motivating the young talented youths. Narayan was one among the first students of renowned Ghandian Dr. Anuragh Narayan sinha who was a close colleague of Mahatma Gandhi. Jayaprakash Narayan got married with Prabhavati Devi.
His wife was also a freedom fighter in her own rights. She was a staunch disciple of kasthurba Gandhi. Prabhavathi was the daughter of Brij kishore Prasad who was a famous nationalist, lawyer and previous Gandhian of Bihar.
Political activities of Narayan
After completing his education, he actively participated in political works for the Indian freedom movement. He returned to india and joined the Indian National congress. The great freedom fighter Jawaharlal Nehru invited jayaprakash Narayan to the Indian national congress in 1929. Mahatma Gandhi became the counselor of the congress.
During the Indian independence movement, jayaprakash was arrested, imprisoned and tortured by British people several times. He vigorously participated in Quit India movement and won particular fame during that time. Narayan was arrested for the civil disobedience against the British and put in Nasik Jail.
Narayan was awarded with Bharath Ratna award, India’s highest civilian award for his social work. He was participated in several political activities and rendered his service for the independence of India.
Death
In March 1979, narayan was admitted in hospital to get treatment for diabetics and heart ailment. The treatment given to narayan was not successful. Jayaprakash Narayan died on 8th October 1979 in Patna, Bihar. He was died three days before his 77th birthday. The reason for his death was severe diabetics and heart problem.
