Prachin Hanuman Mandir is located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place, New Delhi. A number of state emporiums are located near the temple. Hanuman Mandir is situated at the Baba Kharak Singh Marg (road) near Connaught Place. One of the oldest Hanuman temples in the country, it was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the year 1724. One of the oldest Hanuman Temples ever built; it was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1724. The idol of this strange temple is a swayambhu (self-created). However, since the time of its construction, the temple has undergone numerous restorations. None of the highlights of the temple is the 24-hour chanting of the mantra `Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram` since August 1, 1964. This continuous chanting has even secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Hanuman Temple has withstood the Mughals` onslaught on the numerous Hindu temples.
There is a crescent moon symbol in the vimana, unlike the `Aum` or Sun symbols above the vimana as in other Hindu shrines. This might the reason why the Mughals did not destroy the temple. The idol faces south and is known as the Bala Hanuman. In the left hand of the Lord Hanuman idol is a Gada (a weapon) and the right hand rests over his chest as in prayer. The main Dwar (gate) of the Hanuman Mandir is adorned with embossed artwork that depicts the great epic “Ramayana” completely.Situated on the Bada Kharak Singh Road (old Irwin Road) about 250m southwest of Connaught Circus, this temple is of little architectural importance. The residents of Delhi are, however, particularly devoted to it.
The original temple appears to have been constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh about the same times as the Jantar -Mantar, but has undergone large scale renewals since then. As Hanuman spent his life worshipping Vishnu and Lakshmi, there are many shrines for them inside as well as other popular Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Also next to Bagga Service station.Apart from being considered a sacred place, the temple is also known for `mehendi` work done on the hands of ladies outside the Mandir.
The temple gains special significance on Tuesdays, when it is thronged by thousands of devotees. While your trip to the temple, you can also visit evening flower market near the temple. Henna tattoo artists sit nearby the temple to assist their clients in decorating them. They can make extremely complicated designs on your hands. Marrried women can purchase bangle from the bangle sellers most of whom are muslims. This is indeed a perfect example of thriving in harmony.
You will also find sellers dealing in religious objects. And you must not skip kachoris which are simply too good to miss. Kachori is a heavy and spicy Indian snack which is usually eaten with potato curry.
