
Ganesh Dutt

As an administrator he has given hearty contribution to the growth of education and health service in the state of Orissa and Bihar. Sir Ganesh Dutt singh was also a philanthropist.
He voluntarily offers donation for the setup of educational institutions as well as for many schools and colleges from his personal properties and earnings. Dutt was a unique person. He practiced what he preached. He was a great man who is well known for self sacrifice. Dutt was a minister for local self government. Four thousand rupees was his salary as a minister of LSG.
Early life of Sir Ganesh Dutt Singh
Dutt was born on 13th January 1868 in chhatiyana village of nalanda district, Bihar. He belongs to the middle class Bhumihar Brahmin family. Sir Ganesh Dutt singh started to study English when he was at the age of eighteen. He passed the matriculation examination in the first division at the age of twenty three in 1891. He secured a monthly scholarship of Rs. 10.
Dutt won a silver medal for proficiency in mathematics. In 1893 he passed the intermediate examination. Finally he completed his graduation in B.L when he was nearly thirty in 1897. He enrolled as a Lawyer in Calcutta high court in 1904.
Dutt as a lawyer and philanthropist
After completing his training as Vakkil for twelve years, but he was not regarded amongst the rank lawyers. He was elected as a member of the Bihar and Orissa Legislative council in 1927. Later on he became the minister in the government of Bihar and Orissa from 1923 to1937. As a member of provincial government, Sir Ganesh Dutt Singh became the Indian administrator and educationist. As perfect philanthropist, he dedicated his service for the growth and improvement of education.
He was a rare type of philanthropist who provided various kinds of donations to the educational institution, school and colleges from his own earnings and assets. He rendered his service and dedication for the improvements of education in all the aspects. He offered ample of scholarships to the universities.
He donated Rs. 3000 from his salary continuously for 14 years to the educational institutions, disabled, widows etc. Dutt donated Rs. 4 Lacs to the Patna University and created scholarship fund for higher education in science and technology. After his death, Dutt donated his own house “Krishna Kunj” to the Patna University.
Honor of Ganesh
Dutt was knighted in the year 1928. He got honored with the degree of doctorate by Patna University in 1933. It was a fitting tribute to his wonderful services to the cause of the educational advancement to the students of Bihar.
Ganesh Dutt was famous personality who offered his entire life to the growth of education. His simplicity of life, high character, and exemplary sacrifices for public utility will be the great admiration for the upcoming generations of Bihar.
Death of Ganesh
Dutt died on 26th September 1943 in bihar. Before his death, Ganesh Dutt dedicated his residential place for the growth of education to Patna University.
